The Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra, Donetsk Oblast

The Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra isan Orthodox monastery in Svyatogorsk, Donetsk region. It is located on the high right bank of the Severskiy Donets, in the area, which is called the Holy Mountains. 

Apart from elevated structures, there are some chalk caves on the territory of the monastery. The relics of Saint John the Anchorite of Svyatogorskare kept in the lavra. The first monks settled in the Holy Mountains in the 14th or 15th centuries. And in 1624 the Svyatogorsk Dormition Monastery was officially founded. 

For some time the monastery used to be a fortress on the border with the Crimean khanate. It had its own brickyards, mills, shopping streets, and was famous for its amazing landscapes and attracted a lot of pilgrims. Before the World War I there were about 600 monks in the monastery. The Svyatogorsk monastery was eliminated by the Bolsheviks in the thirties of the 20th century, but in due time in 1992 it was revived. In the year 2004 the Svyatogorsk Dormition Monasterydeserved the status of Lavra.
